Assessing Potential for Further Mobile Coverage

for Telecom Operators in Africa

Client Brief

  • Telecom Operators need to identify areas where it makes economic sense to install new base stations (BTS) in order to expand their reach. As they expand in rural areas, with lower densities, the choice of location has to be done in a surgical manner to maximise RoI

  • An algorithm combining both granular population density open data and coverage information to detect the most promising zones (“white spots”) where BTS should be installed

  • Interactive secured online platform displaying the current coverage of the operator and the white spots found by the algorithm, with key information (potential of new population covered, wealth estimation, etc.)

  • Excel files listing all the white spots by priority (highest potential)
