Estimating Cities Destruction with Satellite Radar Data

Mariupol, Ukraine

Mosul, Iraq

Eastern Ghouta, Syria

Sana'a & Hodeida, Yemen

Context and Issues

Destructions in conflict-ridden countries difficult to access can be challenging to assess, leading to potentially mismatched humanitarian responses.

Solution

Masae used Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) techniques to spot incoherencies between before and after the conflict on Sentinel-1 satellite data, allowing to detect building damages.

The team successfully detected destructions in Mossoul, Raqqa, Sanaa and Mariupol which were consistent with field expertise and secondary sources.

Our work led to several publications (see here).
