Identifying Target Zones for an Agricultural Development Program using Satellite-derived Data

Iraq

Context and Issues

An international NGO funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) was preparing the implementation of a major program aiming to improve the business environment and resilience capacity of farmer households in four districts of Iraq. These target districts were particularly weakened by the ISIS conflict in the 2013-2017 period and recent drought episodes in 2021 and 2022.

Solution

Masae Analytics collected geospatial and remote sensing data to compute several indicators of interest at a granular scale, in order to help Mercy Corps understand the differences in demographic and agricultural settings among the districts but also inside each district (analysis performed at the subdistrict level). The indicator concerned population estimates, settlement counts, displacement, cropland area, crops water stress, distance to waterways and precipitation deficit.
