Using Satellite Imagery to Measure Impact of Agricultural Support Development Programmes

Iraq

Context and Issues

An International Development Agency rehabilitated irrigation canals in Iraq in order to support the local agricultural sector, and asked Masae to leverage remote sensing tools to evaluate the impact on local crops and farmers’ profitability.

Solution

Masae used Planet satellite images and data collected on the ground to classify crop types and assess differences in crops moisture & health between control and treatment areas (using remote sensing indexes such as NDVI or NDMI).

The team managed to quantify improvements in productivity and changes in land use caused by the project and analyse which areas close to the canals had been positively impacted by the programme.

The analysis results were summarised through periodic reports.
