Measuring Urban Expansion in Rural Iraq

Iraq

Context and Issues

An international NGO seeking to provide support to populations in Anbar needed visibility on population patterns to better tailor their intervention in service delivery and access to infrastructure. Unfortunately, there is no existing data on how the conflict with ISIS has affected the density of urban areas, and whether targeted cities have experienced any growth after the war.

Solution

Masae developed a remote sensing methodology to quantify the areas either constructed or destroyed between different dates based on high-resolution satellite images. This allowed to produce estimates over time of city sizes and identify neighborhoods with the fastest urban expansion.
